How to Book a DOC Hut in New Zealand
New Zealand has over 950 Department of Conservation (DOC) huts across both islands. Roughly 160 of them require advance bookings — the rest operate on a first-come, first-served basis with a hut pass. This guide covers the bookable ones.
Which huts need to be booked in advance?
Not all DOC huts require bookings. The ones that do fall into two broad categories:
- Great Walk huts and campsites — All nine Great Walks in New Zealand (Milford Track, Routeburn Track, Kepler Track, Tongariro Northern Circuit, Whanganui Journey, Abel Tasman Coast Track, Heaphy Track, Paparoa Track, and Te Araroa Pūkaha to Pōrangahau section) require advance booking for their dedicated huts and campsites. Spots often sell out months in advance.
- Bookable backcountry and serviced huts — Many popular serviced huts outside the Great Walks also operate a booking system, especially in Fiordland, Canterbury, and other high-traffic regions. These can be booked online and typically open for reservations up to 6 months ahead.
Hut Finder tracks all huts that are bookable through the DOC website — currently around 160 stays across both islands.
Step-by-step: booking on the DOC website
- Create a DOC account — Go to doc.govt.nz and register for a free account. You'll need this to make and manage bookings.
- Find your hut — Search for the hut by name or browse by track/region. Each hut has a dedicated booking page showing a calendar of availability.
- Select your dates — Click your intended arrival date. The system shows how many bunks (or rooms, for lodges) are available each night.
- Add to cart and pay — DOC accepts Visa and Mastercard online. Hut fees vary by hut category. At time of writing, serviced hut fees range from NZD $15 to $80+ per person per night for Great Walks.
- Receive confirmation — You'll get a booking confirmation by email with a printable/digital voucher. Bring this on your trip — wardens check bookings.
- Check in at the hut — Show your voucher to the hut warden when you arrive. No-shows are common and DOC occasionally reallocates unclaimed bunks on the night, so it's worth arriving before dark.
How far in advance can you book?
The standard booking window opens 6 months in advance for most bookable huts. For example, if you want to walk the Routeburn Track in January, you can start booking from around mid-July the previous year.
Great Walk bookings for the upcoming season typically open in a coordinated release — often in May or June for the following summer season. DOC announces these dates on their website and social media channels. Competition for popular dates (Christmas, New Year, Easter) is fierce and some tracks sell out within hours of the booking window opening.
Hut Finder Pro users can see the full 6-month availability calendar for all huts, which makes planning much easier. Free users see the next 14 days.
Tips for securing popular huts
- Know the booking window opening date — For Great Walks, find out exactly when the new season opens. Set a calendar reminder for a few days before so you can be ready at your computer when it goes live.
- Be flexible on dates — Mid-week trips (Tuesday to Thursday) are significantly easier to book than weekends. Shoulder season (March-April, October-November) has much better availability than peak summer.
- Watch for cancellations — People's plans change. Cancellations happen year-round, and many spots open up in the weeks before a popular walk. Hut Finder's cancellation alerts notify you the moment a spot opens on your target hut and dates.
- Have a backup plan — Check nearby alternative huts or campsites. Often the adjacent hut has availability even when the flagship one is full.
- Check early morning — DOC's booking system is busiest at night. Early mornings often have fresh cancellations that came in overnight.
Cancellations and refunds
DOC's cancellation policy allows refunds when you cancel more than 24 hours before your stay. Cancellations within 24 hours of check-in are generally non-refundable. You can cancel and modify bookings through your DOC account online.
If you can no longer make your trip, consider cancelling your booking as early as possible — it frees up the spot for another tramper and keeps the spirit of fair access to huts.
What to do if a hut is fully booked
Don't give up immediately. A sold-out hut on a specific date isn't necessarily gone forever. Options include:
- Check alternative dates — one day earlier or later might be open.
- Set a cancellation alert on Hut Finder and wait for a spot to open.
- Browse nearby huts in the same region using the Regions directory.
- Consider camping at an adjacent DOC campsite — many are near fully-booked huts.
